John Andrew Williams developed the Academic Life Coaching program in 2005 in Portland, OR. John started his career as a high school Latin teacher and started his life coach training in 2004. He created the Academic Life Coaching Program in 2005 when he realized there was a big gap in what students were learning in school and what was really useful in life. In 2009, he started training others who wanted to work with life coaching skills and youth. Hayden Lee has been trained and certified as an Academic Life Coach to bring this program to the Greater Los Angeles area.
The ALC Program is designed to address:
Stress about grades. Students will have the opportunity to become aware of their own unique learning, thinking, and memory styles. Then, a study “system” can be created that best supports their styles.
Lack of Motivation. Students get to discover their own motivation style. They will also define their Trademarked Values and Signature Perspectives, tools to identify what really drives them.
Frustration in Relationships. Students will learn how to communicate more effectively with parents, teachers, and peers using tools such as Empathy and the Assumption Chart.
Anxiety about the college application and admissions process. The program culminates with the student beginning to plan a Leadership Project that involves critical thinking and creativity. After completing this program, students will be more self-aware and emotionally intelligent, two things that many teenagers are lacking today, and college admissions officers are looking for when reading essays.
Concern that teenagers aren’t learning the necessary skills to become successful adults. Here are some specific examples of skills students work on throughout the course of the program: time management, organization, setting goals and staying motivated to achieve those goals, communication, active leadership, and defining what lifelong values bring them fulfillment, meaning, and purpose.
Some of Hayden’s favorite ALC Concepts that he covers with your student:
- The Wheel of Life
- The Future Self
- Trademarked Values
- Conditional vs. Intrinsic Motivation
- Building Empathy
